Premise
✈️
Seoul has around 200 hanbok rental shops to accomodate for one of the most popular toursist attractions that is trying on hanbok.
👗
Hanbok is Korea’s traditional garment that was mainstream wear until the early 20th century. It is now reserved as formal wear for special occasions.

Social features such as liking and sharing capabilities facilitate creation and expression to build a strong foundation for the app.
Competitive Analysis
While there are currently no apps related to hanbok education or hanbok tourism, there are a handful of fashion and game related hanbok dress-up apps available. These apps are valuable in that they allow users to visualize themselves wearing hanbok and make hanbok accessible regardless of the user’s location or financial situation, however the visualization is quite rudimentary, using outdated methods of ‘paper doll’ stickering.
Personas
In order to develop an app that reflects the needs of potential users, target user personas were created which represent the types of travelers visiting South Korea. While the app will aim to consolidate hanbok related information for tourists, it will also cater to visitors looking to join a community, and looking for economic ways to enjoy their stay.
Businesses and Organizations will also be able to create accounts. These users are looking for ways to promote themselves, their products, and their events.
Design Solution
Create a mobile app that allows target users (tourists + global audience) to:
1. Learn about hanbok’s evolution
2. Access consolidated information relating to hanbok tourism
3. Visualize different styles of hanbok
4. Participate in the growth of tourism in Korean
The app will allow users to learn about the evolution of hanbok through educational editorials. They will be able to access information related to hanbok rental shops such as locations, directions, reviews and inventory. Users will be able to reserve and rent their choice of hanbok through this feature as well as ‘like’ and ‘save’ certain products. The app will also include an AR camera that will allow users to ‘try-on’ different style of hanbok, which will help them make decisions before renting. Lastly, users will be able to make profiles and like and comment on eachother’s posts in order to grow a community.

AR Camera Prototype
Using Maya, I modeled a hanbok and created a UV map which will work with a front facing hanbok image. This way, any hanbok dress can be photographed and be rendered in AR. The hanbok images were created using StyleGAN2. The model was brought into Snapchat’s Lens studio and applied to the 3D body template.
